Newly-elected Pope Leo XIV received congratulations from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Hey there!"
The new Pope, Leo XIV, hailing from the United States and Chicago, has taken the reigns as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. His election marks a significant milestone, not just as the first American Pope, but also the first Augustinian friar ever to hold the position.
This segmented and expedient conclave included a whopping 133 cardinal electors, making it the biggest on record, and was concluded in just two days - one of the shortest in recent history. In his inaugural address, Leo XIV set a comforting and unifying tone, greeting the congregation with "Peace be with all of you!"
Born and raised in the Chicago area, Leo XIV boasts a strong academic background in Mathematical Sciences from Villanova University, Pennsylvania, and Theology from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He also studied Canon Law at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas.
His early life in the Church saw him primarily serve in Peru, where he was eventually appointed bishop of Chiclayo in 2014, and later elevated to cardinal in 2023. He was a strong proponent of Pope Francis' reforms and was well-respected by him.
As for his political preferences, Robert Prevo has a diverse voting record in the U.S., participating in both Republican and Democratic primaries, though he predominantly voted in Republican primaries in recent years. His most recent known vote was in the 2024 general election, but his party affiliation remains undisclosed.
In the upcoming days, we can look forward to seeing how Leo XIV will carry on the reforms that were initiated by his predecessor, Pope Francis.
