Let the game begin!

Reem Alabali-Radovan, the switcheroo queen, has stepped up to bat, replacing Svenja Schulze (SPD) as the minister responsible for development. In these fickle, geopolitical times, she stressed that Germany needs a lifeline, a dependable partner around the globe more than ever. The Bureau of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is poised to keep those bonds tight and maintain long-term relationships.

"In times like these, cooperation, solidarity, and dependability ain't a given fact," she warned, adding a healthy dose of realism to her speech. "But fear not, folks, the BMZ is here to ensure we weather the storm together," she vowed.

During the season of black-red coalition negotiations, the Union tussled for the brimstone of the development aid ministry. Yet the SPD remained staunch, refusing to cave. In the end, the parties struck a deal: BMZ would be the new home for all development-related services previously handled by other departments.

"The war on deprivation, hunger, and injustice will always be the beating heart of a development policy that lives and breathes fairness and compassion," Alabali-Radovan pledged. She aims to bring fair economic cooperation to the table, striking deals that profit both Germany and its partners. "We're gonna focus on those win-win collaborations, from extracting resources to harnessing the power of green hydrogen," she said with determination.

Alabali-Radovan has been an integral part of the Federal Chancellery since 2021, serving as the Commissioner for Migration, Refugees, and Integration. In 2022, she also donned the cape of the Commissioner for Anti-Racism. Now, SPD politician Natalie Pawlik is set to take over these roles. Born in Moscow, Alabali-Radovan comes from a minority Christian background in Iraq. She is also the deputy state chairwoman of the SPD in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
