What's fueling the recent unity within the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party? - Newfound Harmony within AfD: Understanding the Cause

Unfamiliar territory! The South West AFD kicked off the March 8th state election with an unexpected display of unity during the nomination of their state list. In a shocking turn, the 400 delegates voted as one for placements 1 to 19, with minimal competition and minimal questions directed towards the candidates. The only contested spot was for placement 20.

Emil Sänze, state parliamentarian and co-party leader, took the top spot with a whopping 276 yes votes and just 95 no votes. The majority of proposals breezed through the first round, with only one candidate for placement 18 rejected.

A Landslide Vote

At the Heilbronn convention, party leader Markus Frohnmaier was near unanimously chosen as the top candidate by the 400 delegates. Only one opposing vote was cast. This level of unity is far from the norm for a state association that's been at each other's throats for years.

Past party conventions of the South West AFD were a battleground for verbal blowouts and power struggles. However, at the Heilbronn convention center (the name of the event location: "Harmony"), the old fights and intrigues seemed like relics of the past.

Government Aspirations

Is the current political victory propelling the association to maintain order? In a survey by Southwest Broadcasting (SWR) and the "Stuttgarter Zeitung" published mid-May, the AFD garnered 19% of the state's votes[1]. The AFD stakes a claim to govern, but no other party is willing to form a coalition with them, making government participation in the Southwest unlikely.

Why the Harmony Now?

The current harmony may also be due to changes in the association's meeting structure. The state association now limits participation to delegates, as opposed to simple members, making organization easier and reducing the unpredictability of local voting results[4]. Moreover, the press was barred from entering the delegate hall at the Heilbronn convention.

Another reason for the harmony could be the departure or retreat of some critics of the current state board. For instance, traffic politician Dirk Spaniel, a known adversary of Alice Weidel and the current state board, is no longer a member of the AFD[3].

Extra Insights:

Political parties often unite around shared goals, effective leadership and strategic planning, and to respond to external pressures. The current harmony within the South West AFD might stem from success in recent polls, changes in the association's meeting structure, and the departure of some critics of the current state board[2]. However, these inferences are speculative and further investigation is needed to accurately understand the reasons behind this unusual display of unity.

  • In the context of the EU, this unexpected unity among EC countries could indicate a shift in policy-and-legislation regarding the free movement of workers and the freedom to provide services, as the AFD's recent state election victory and the ensuing harmony within its ranks might signal a strategic response to external pressures and a commitment to shared goals such as effective leadership and efficient governance.
  • This unprecedented unity within the AFD, as witnessed in the Heilbronn convention, could have significant implications for politics and general news, as it diverges from the party's historically contentious nature. This unexpected harmony could signify a more cohesive approach to policy-making, potentially influencing the outcomes of future state elections and policy decisions.
