Man City's Kalvin Phillips Sparks Transfer Battle
Newcastle United is about to join the race for Manchester City's midfield gem, Kalvin Phillips, according to The Northern Echo. However, the Magpies are not alone in their pursuit – Bayern Munich has also eye-balled Phillips as a priority target for the next transfer window.
Eddie Howe is pulling out all the stops to bring Phillips to the Toon due to defensive midfield woes, but City is willing to part ways provided the offers meet their valuation. While the Cityzens' contract with Phillips runs until 2028, any buyout offer starting at €35 million would be music to their ears.
Interestingly, the €49 million City shelled out for Phillips last summer might seem like a hefty sum, but considering his limited game time so far, it could be seen as an unnecessary expense. Injuries and tactical decisions have hindered his integration into the champions' lineup, with a mere 26 appearances to his name and most of them being sub appearances totaling about 760 minutes. Nonetheless, the 27-year-old has grabbed the attention of other top clubs due to his impressive 29 caps and 1 goal for England.
If Newcastle and Bayern Munich fail to seal the deal, Leeds United might slip in to scoop Phillips back. Despite being on loan at Ipswich Town, the midfielder has expressed a desire to return to his former club. The two parties are in discussions, with a possible loan deal with an option to buy on the table.
