New Zealand’s Christmas weather splits between rain and warmth
Christmas Day will bring a mix of weather across New Zealand, with warm temperatures in some regions and rain in others. Forecasters warn that celebrations may need to move indoors as wet conditions affect parts of the country.
The far north could see persistent rain, particularly in Kaitaia and the Bay of Islands. Meanwhile, the West Coast and Southern Alps are expected to experience the heaviest downpours, especially around Fiordland and Milford Sound. These areas often receive over 5,000 mm of rain annually, making them particularly vulnerable to wet Christmas weather.
Temperatures will remain high but not as extreme as earlier in the week. Hastings recorded the country’s highest temperature on Tuesday at 33.4°C, but Christmas Day will see highs in the late 20s. Wellington, Waikato, and Hawke’s Bay will stay warm but windy, while Christchurch is set to be the warmest spot in the South Island, reaching 26°C.
A heat alert has been issued for Napier and Hastings due to the lingering warmth. Despite the rain in some areas, many regions will still enjoy mild conditions, though gusty winds may affect outdoor plans.
The varied forecast means some will celebrate Christmas in sunshine, while others face rain. Those in wetter regions may need to adjust their plans, moving gatherings indoors. The weather will remain changeable, with warmth in many areas but showers persisting in the north and west.
