New York Yankees face potential elimination following crushing defeat in ALDS Game 3 versus Tampa Bay Rays.

The Tampa Bay Rays have taken a 2-1 lead in the ALDS series against the New York Yankees following a hard-fought Game 3.

In a closely contested match, the Rays secured an 8-4 victory at Yankee Stadium on October 7, 2025. The series, played at Steinbrenner Field due to hurricane damage at Tropicana Field, has been competitive so far, with both teams showcasing strong performances.

The Rays' success in Game 3 can be attributed to a solid pitching performance from starter Charlie Morton, who kept the first seven Yankee batters hitless, and a powerful offensive display. Outfielder Randy Arozarena hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, further extending Tampa's lead, while Kevin Kiermaier launched a three-run homer in the same inning to put the Rays ahead 5-1.

Ji-Man Choi and Michael Perez contributed to the Rays' offensive effort with RBI singles in the sixth and sixth innings, respectively, increasing Tampa's lead to 8-2. Giancarlo Stanton managed to hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, reducing Tampa's lead to 8-4, but it was not enough to secure a Yankees victory.

The Yankees' pitching staff struggled in Game 3, with starter Masahiro Tanaka having difficulties. He finished with eight hits, four strikeouts, and five earned runs through four innings pitched. Chad Green took over pitching for Tanaka in the fifth inning.

Two controversial strike calls from home plate umpire Mark Carlson also played a role in the game's outcome. In the fourth inning, a full count and controversial ball four call on Willy Adames resulted in Joey Wendle being gunned down stealing second base in the next inning.

Despite the loss, Giancarlo Stanton continues to impress, becoming the only Yankee to homer in five straight playoff games. Jordan Montgomery is expected to start elimination game four for the Yankees at 7 p.m. on Thursday night.

With the series now at 2-1 in favour of the Rays, both teams will be looking to bounce back in the upcoming games. The Yankees will be hoping to capitalise on their home-field advantage and level the series, while the Rays will aim to secure their place in the ALCS.
