New York Knicks Plan to Retain Malcolm Brogdon and Landry Shamet
New York Knicks Secure Malcolm Brogdon and Landry Shamet for the 2024-25 Season
The New York Knicks have made a significant move in their roster for the upcoming 2024-25 season, securing the services of Malcolm Brogdon and Landry Shamet.
Landry Shamet, who spent part of last season with the Knicks, has decided to return to the team after a brief stint with other options. Shamet, who is entering his 7th NBA season, expressed his desire to return to a locker room he enjoyed and help the team compete for a title.
Shamet's return was officially confirmed last Thursday, following a one-year deal. It's worth noting that Shamet was initially waived by the Knicks after suffering a shoulder injury in training camp but later signed with them in December 2024 after recovering.
In the 2023-24 season, Shamet made a significant impact off the bench, appearing in 50 games and averaging 5.7 points and 1.2 rebounds. He also set a career-best 3-point shooting percentage of 39.7%, a feat he achieved while playing for the Knicks.
Malcolm Brogdon, a former Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year award winner, joined the Knicks last week on a one-year contract. Brogdon, who played for the Washington Wizards last season, appeared in just 24 games (13 starts), averaging 12.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 23.5 minutes per contest.
The Knicks are planning to retain both Brogdon and Shamet on their opening night roster. However, the team faces a challenge in making a trade to open up cap space to keep both players, as they are hard-capped and can't exceed the $207.8 million second tax apron threshold.
To manage the salary cap efficiently, the Knicks are expected to involve players like Pacome Dadiet in trade negotiations, potentially packaging him with future draft picks. Justin Champagnie is a likely trade target given his low salary and potential role, which might be acquired by trading players like Dadiet along with draft assets.
In addition to Brogdon and Shamet, the Knicks have also signed Garrison Mathews, Matt Ryan, and Alex Len this week. These new additions join Jericho Sims, who is expected to remain with the team, as the Knicks prepare for the 2024-25 season.
Stefan Bondy of the New York Post reported this information. The Knicks are aiming to create a competitive team and are hopeful that the addition of Brogdon and Shamet, along with their other signings, will help them achieve their goal.
