In a significant recognition of its poignant exploration of social and cultural topics, the documentary "Gingerbread for Her Father, My Great-Grandfather, Her Grandfather" by Kazakh director Alina Mustafina has won the Sikay Tang Critical Lens Award at the 48th Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF) in New York.

Background and Previous Recognitions

Produced with support from Kazakhstan's Ministry of Culture and Information and the National Cinema Support Center, the film premiered internationally at the Busan International Film Festival and had its European debut in Turin. It has also been screened at the Bolzano Film Festival Bozen in Italy and the ORAI Festival in Kazakhstan.

The film has previously won the Bright Debut prize at Almaty’s Bastau Film Festival and the Best International Feature Award at Tehran’s Cinéma Vérité festival. These accolades reflect the documentary's deep dive into social and cultural issues, a characteristic that makes it stand out in the AAIFF's documentary program.

The Sikay Tang Critical Lens Award

Named after the renowned filmmaker and editor Sikay Tang, the Sikay Tang Critical Lens Award is a prestigious accolade in Asian American documentary cinema. AAIFF, founded in 1978, is the oldest Asian American cinema festival, providing a major platform for Asian and Asian American filmmakers to share their stories worldwide.

A Journey Through Generations

"Gingerbread for Her Father, My Great-Grandfather, Her Grandfather" is an autobiographical journey of three generations of women as they travel through Kazakhstan, Poland, and Tatarstan in search of their roots, language, and identity. The film has received international recognition, including its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival.

The award ceremony took place in New York, marking another milestone in the film's journey. The documentary's success underscores Alina Mustafina's emerging profile as a filmmaker who addresses heritage and identity themes with depth and innovation.
