Lagos International Fire Safety Conference Highlights Significant Investment in Fire Safety

At the Lagos International Fire Safety Conference 2.0, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of fire safety and the need for significant investment in firefighting resources. The conference, aimed at promoting best practices in fire safety and emergency response, brought together local and international experts.

During his speech, Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that the state has seen a significant reduction in fire incidents. According to him, this reduction can be attributed to the deployment of technology, such as drones and smoke detectors, and community engagement. He highlighted the government's efforts to promote fire safety awareness, particularly among children, and encouraged traditional leaders to take the message of safety back to their communities.

Commissioner Gbenga Oyerinde also highlighted the need for a rethink in the state's strategy for fire safety and emergency response. He emphasized the importance of public awareness campaigns and knowledge sharing in preventing fire disasters.

In terms of budget, the total budget of Lagos State for 2025 is N3.367 Trillion Naira, equivalent to $2.2 Billion Dollars. However, the budget for the fire department for 2025 and 2026, as per the governor, is approximately $2.6 billion. It is worth noting that the budget of the fire department in New York City is more than the total budget of Lagos State, indicating a significant difference in public expenditure priorities and scales between the two jurisdictions.

The conference provided a platform for stakeholders to share insights and expertise, with a focus on fire safety as a shared mandate requiring active participation from individuals, communities, and the private sector. The devastating consequences of fire incidents demand collaborative and innovative efforts to safeguard communities.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also underscored the importance of building an economy that can withstand shocks and respond to the state's growing population. The conference featured technical sessions, exhibitions, and trainings, aiming to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute to a fire-free Lagos.
