New York-based film festival honors Kazakh director with a prestigious award for their documentary film

In a remarkable turn of events, Kazakhstani director Alina Mustafina has been awarded the Sikay Tang Critical Lens Award at the 48th Asian American International Film Festival. Her documentary film, "Cookies for Her Father, My Great-Grandfather, Her Grandfather," tells the poignant story of three generations of women.

The film follows Labiba, a woman from Kazakhstan, as she embarks on a journey from her homeland to Poland in search of the mass grave where her father was buried. Accompanying her on this emotional journey are her daughter, the film's director, and granddaughter. Together, they not only search for physical remains but also strive to restore the lost connections between them.

The film's setting includes travel through their ancestral village in Tatarstan, offering a unique glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region. The film was produced with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Center for the Support of National Cinema.

The award, one of the most prestigious in the festival's documentary program, in its second year, recognises outstanding achievements in filmmaking. This year, out of 12 films from around the world in the documentary program, only three were nominated.

Alina Mustafina dedicated the award to her grandmother, the film's main character, who passed away 14 days ago. She also thanked her team, including the remarkable cinematographer, sound engineer, composer, and producers.

On Instagram, Alina expressed her gratitude for receiving the award named after the outstanding female filmmaker Sikay Tang in New York, calling it a great honour. The jury members praised the film's story, characters, and unique poetic cinematic language.

Despite limited information available about the film in public sources, it seems that "Cookies for Her Father, My Great-Grandfather, Her Grandfather" has made a significant impact in the film festival circuit, marking a promising start for Alina Mustafina's career in documentary filmmaking.
