New Year’s fireworks and lights: How to celebrate safely in Russia

As New Year’s Eve approaches, Russians are preparing to celebrate with fireworks and decorative lights. But safety remains a key concern when buying and using pyrotechnics. Authorities remind shoppers to follow strict guidelines to avoid accidents and ensure compliance with regulations.

The sale of consumer fireworks typically peaks in December, with most regions allowing private use of category F2 fireworks by December 31. However, exact sale periods and local restrictions can vary across municipalities, making it essential for buyers to check regional rules before purchasing.

When buying fireworks, experts advise purchasing only from authorised stores that meet fire safety standards. Packaging must display the manufacturing date, proper labelling, and a quality certification mark. Instructions in Russian should also be included, detailing usage, expiration dates, storage conditions, and the Rosstandart compliance mark.

String lights require equal attention. Buyers should inspect wire insulation, particularly at connection points, to ensure no damage exists. A strong chemical smell from the lights is a red flag, indicating potential hazards. Outdoor string lights must meet stricter safety requirements, so checking for the EAEU conformity mark (EAC) is crucial. Testing lights by asking the seller to plug them in before purchase can help confirm they work safely.

Fireworks themselves must be stored in a dry place, kept well out of children’s reach. Safety, technical specifications, and usage conditions should guide every purchase decision to prevent accidents during celebrations.

With New Year’s festivities nearing, proper precautions ensure celebrations remain joyful and accident-free. Buyers must verify product certifications, follow storage guidelines, and adhere to local regulations. Doing so helps guarantee that fireworks and decorative lights are used safely and responsibly.
