New Year's Eve Swimming Event by Mainz Fire Department: Same Excitement on a Shorted Course
The Mainz Fire Department hosted its 51st annual New Year's Swim on New Year's Day, with a slight change in the starting location due to the unavailability of the fire-fighting boat. Instead, participants gathered at Kaiser Tor and started their chilly swim for the first time from the stairs there.
Approximately 200 brave souls braved temperatures around freezing point and water temperatures of 13°C to participate in the event, which was attended by around 400 spectators. Despite the cold, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and camaraderie as participants, some creatively dressed or with floating utensils, swam along the Rhine bank.
The 'Early Start e.V.' association, which was founded in 1993, was the beneficiary of this year's news event. The association works tirelessly for premature babies, sick newborns, and at-risk children, aiming to improve the care of children in the neonatal intensive care unit and the associated follow-up facilities of the children's clinic at the University Medical Center Mainz through various measures.
The Mainz Fire Department wishes all citizens a safe slide into the new year and all the best for 2025. For any inquiries, you can reach them at Phone: 06131 - 12 4650, Email: [email protected], or visit their website: Mainz Fire Department's website.
The event was secured by several rescue boats due to the life-threatening nature of swimming in the Rhine without training, equipment, and safety measures. Other emergency services, including fire departments from various cities, the emergency police, the water police, the German Armed Forces, the State Fire and Disaster Protection Academy, local groups of the DLRG and THW, private diving clubs, and employees of politics and administration of the city of Mainz, were also present to ensure the safety of the participants.
Mayor Nino Haase gave the starting signal at 10 a.m. and also participated in the swim. Other well-known faces from politics and society were present on the Rhine bank to support the event. The evening ended in a cozy atmosphere after receiving Mayor Nino Haase and Mr. Stefan Behrendt, Inspector of Fire and Disaster Protection of the city of Mainz, in the Rheingoldhalle.
Despite the changed route, the New Year's swim was a great success again this year. The proceeds from the accompanying donation campaign will be donated to the 'Early Start e.V.' association in Mainz this year. However, the name of the chairman of the board of the 'Early Start e.V.' foundation supported in 2023 could not be found in the search results.
