New Year's Eve Swimming Event by Mainz Fire Department: 51 Participants Despite Shorter Route Enjoy Equal Amount of Fun
The Mainz Fire Department hosted the 51st annual New Year's Day swim this morning, drawing approximately 200 participants and around 400 spectators who watched from the riverbank. Mayor Nino Haase gave the starting signal at 10 am and joined the swimmers in the chilly waters of the Rhine, which had an approximate temperature of 13°C. The event was secured by several rescue boats staffed with professional swimmers, ensuring the safety of all participants. The New Year's Day swim is more than just a community event; it serves as an opportunity for the fire department to showcase their water rescue capabilities and build relationships with other water rescue organizations. Firefighters from Aschaffenburg, Kaiserslautern, Ludwigshafen, Maintal, Main-Taunus-Kreis, Mainz, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Offenbach, and Wiesbaden, as well as the police, military, Landesfeuerwehr- und Katastrophenschutzakademie, various local branches of the DLRG, THW, private diving clubs, and employees of the city's politics and administration, were all in attendance. Several well-known figures from politics and society were also present on the riverbank, lending their support to the event. Some participants added a touch of creativity to the swim, donning colourful costumes or using floating accessories. Despite the changed route, this year's swim was once again a great success. The event concluded at the Rheingoldhalle in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The proceeds from the accompanying donation campaign will be donated to 'Frühstart e.V.' Mainz, a non-profit organization that supports premature babies, sick newborns, and at-risk children. The Mainz Fire Department wishes all citizens a safe slide into the new year and all the best for 2025. They would like to extend their gratitude to everyone who participated and supported the event.
