New visitor center at the Bundestag to be completed by 2032 - New visitor center at the Bundestag to be completed by 2032
Construction has started on a new visitor center for the German Bundestag in Berlin. The project will replace the current container-based entry system with a modern underground facility. Completion is expected by 2032, with the handover to parliament scheduled for 2033.
The new center will be built on the site of the former Berlin Pavilion. Before work begins in full, archaeological surveys will take place in 2025, including checks for unexploded ordnance from past conflicts. The existing entry containers will be removed the same year.
Until the center opens, visitors will use a temporary entrance on Paul-Löbe-Allee. Temporary restrooms have already been set up to support the new entry area. The federal budget has allocated nearly €193 million for the visitor center. An additional €60 million will fund an underground cooling plant beneath Platz der Republik, which will serve both the Reichstag and the new facility. Once finished, the center will feature an underground tunnel for secure and efficient access to the parliament building.
The project marks a significant upgrade to the Bundestag’s visitor infrastructure. The new underground system will improve security and visitor flow. Full operation is set to begin in 2033 after the handover from construction teams.
