Sailor Susann Beucke Sets Sail: Her Exciting Voyage Ahead

Here's the thrilling tale of Susann Beucke, a Kiel native set to embark on an offshore regatta with her team, Les Déferlantes. Let's dive into her journey, filled with triumphs, setbacks, and the resilience that defines a true sailor.

Preparations for her maiden voyage in Les Sables Horta, racing from Les Sables d'Olonne to Horta in the Azores, are almost complete. Beucke has meticulously packed her provisions, passed the final safety check, and gathered her gear for the big day this Saturday (28th June).

Months of hard work have led her to this moment, even after a heartbreaking setback. Last autumn, her two major sponsors ended their support, leaving her without a boat and funding for her campaign. "It was a tough time," she confesses, "but I wasn't ready to give up."

Known for her stunning Olympic silver medal in the 49er class, Beucke has been a professional sailor for years. Although not a regular offshore sailor, her accomplishments are far from ordinary. She moved to Lorient, the mecca of offshore sailing, and began sailing in the Figaro class to conquer new challenges.

Despite a few obstacles along the way, Beucke has shown remarkable courage and determination. In 2023, she joined The Ocean Race as a competitor of Boris Herrmann, an invaluable experience that introduced her to sailing on an Imoca yacht. The race taught her valuable lessons that will undoubtedly serve her well in her upcoming adventure.

Beucke's passion for sailing extends beyond her own journey, as she aims to inspire more young women to join the sport. "We need more women in offshore sailing," she says, determined to break stereotypes and encourage others to pursue their dreams.

Just when it seemed all was lost, Beucke found herself in a fortunate turn of events. In the autumn of 2024, she was contacted by French sailor Sasha Lanièce and invited to join her Class40 yacht, and the rest, as they say, is history. Now, the Kiel native is employed as co-skipper in Team Les Déferlantes.

As the start of Les Sables Horta approaches, Beucke reflects on her journey, "I couldn't be more excited for this race. It feels like a fresh start, and I'm grateful to be part of such a dedicated team." From the salty air of the North Sea to the shores of the Azores, Beucke's sailing journey continues to unfold, filled with anticipation, adventure, and a flair for the extraordinary.

Her ambitions stretch far beyond this race, with the Vendée Globe, the toughest solo regatta in the world, in her sights. Should she succeed, she would make history as the first German woman to compete in this legendary event.

Stay tuned for updates on Susann Beucke's sailing journey, as new projects and challenges are sure to arise in the coming months. As a true sailor, she's prepared to weather any storm and continue pushing the boundaries of what's possible.
