Construction of Potsdam's New Synagogue Set for Summer 2024

Approaching eight decades since Potsdam's synagogue's destruction during a wartime air raid, preparations for its glorious rebuild are well underway. The architectural marvel, boasting a monumental structure with arch-like windows spanning ten meters, is set to welcome the community this summer 2024.

Dr. Abraham Lehrer, President of the Central Welfare Office of Jews in Germany (ZWST), shared this exciting update during a recent tour of the construction site. He highlighted that the new synagogue center would not only serve the local Jewish community but also host public events, opening the city's cultural doors widely.

Local SPD Culture Minister Manja Schüle shared the enthusiasm, stating: "This new setup will create opportunities for concerts and readings, fostering camaraderie, and painting a bright future for our community." With its location nestled in the city center, just a stone's throw away from the state parliament, Schüle pointed out its symbolic status. She said, "The newly erected synagogue is a material testament to the unwavering presence of Jewish life within our city."

The center will feature amenities like a visitor's café, a community hall, and a congregation hall accommodating 149 members, with provisions for 50 additional guests in the women's galleries. The synagogue, bathed in natural light through the arched windows and glass rooftop, is designed to accommodate weekly Sabbath celebrations and vacations such as the Feast of Tabernacles.

The project, costing €16.4 million, has been a subject of contention within Jewish communities. However, the ZWST intends to sponsor the project for its first three years as a compromise. Schüle, expressing concern over escalating threats to Jewish communities, emphasized the synagogue's security features, including bulletproof glass panels and a secure entrance gate.

As Potsdam eagerly awaits the official opening, such community spaces and interfaith initiatives across Germany, such as the diverse House of One project in Berlin, inspire a harmonious, inclusive society.
