New Leadership for SPD in Schleswig-Holstein: Midyatli Takes the Reins
The SPD parliamentary group in Schleswig-Holstein's state parliament has chosen Serpil Midyatli as their new chairperson. With eleven votes in favor and no opposing candidates, she stepped into the role on Tuesday, filling the void left by Thomas Losse-Müller's resignation a week prior. One abstention marked the only dissenting vote.
Following her victory at the weekend's SPD conference, where she was re-elected as deputy chairwoman, Midyatli had previously led the parliamentary group before the 2022 state elections. However, after the party's disappointing performance, she stepped down to allow Losse-Müller to take the reins, who ultimately fell short against Minister President Daniel Günther (CDU).
The SPD suffered their worst result ever with 16% of the vote, failing to secure any single constituency. With twelve MPs, they now rank third in the state parliament. Losse-Müller also announced his intention to relinquish his state parliament seat in April and move on to lead the Climate Neutrality Foundation as the Managing Director.
Moving Forward: Adapting Opposition Strategy
During the turmoil of the COVID-19 crisis, a decision was made within the SPD to focus less on adversarial opposition tactics and instead work towards unity. Midyatli pledged to continue this approach while prioritizing the country's best interests moving forward.
Though she suggested a potential shift towards more impassioned opposition tactics at times, she stressed that her primary goal is to surprise the public and demonstrate her unique approach.
Topical issues such as childcare, education policy, and the state's general economic state of affairs are presently at the forefront of many discussions. Midyatli highlighted these topics as areas of significant concern for the SPD.
Previous Missteps and Recovery
In the lead-up to his resignation, Losse-Müller focused extensively on his passion for turning Schleswig-Holstein into the country's first climate-neutral state. However, the SPD parliamentary group was unable to secure the needed support for a billion-euro loan-financed program to achieve this goal in the most recent state parliament session.
The Federal Constitutional Court's ruling on budgetary policy and the debt brake significantly impacted the willingness of MPs to engage with the proposed special fund.
The Opposition's Future
CDU parliamentary group chairperson, Tobias Koch, expects Midyatli to adopt a more rhetorically-focused approach, given her election. Despite this, he maintains that his party remains confident in its own strengths and will not overly focus on opposition tactics.
Lasse Petersdotter, the Green Party's parliamentary group leader, saw potential in Midyatli's election and welcomed her to her new role. Praising her as an experienced colleague, he expressed excitement about working with her in upcoming plenary sessions.
