Slaughterhouse Revamp in Central Saxony
Get ready for a new kid on the block in the agricultural sector of Central Saxony! A state-of-the-art pig slaughterhouse is set to commence operations in Königshain-Wiederau, beginning spring 2024. Genießergenossenschaft Sachsen eG, the brains behind this project, have revealed plans to chop and process up to 60 pigs per week. The novelty? The meat produced will be channeled to partner companies, ensuring minimal transportation distance for the livestock, as they originate from a neighboring barn. It's been a home sweet home vibe for the first batch since August.
Saxony's farming community has long clamored for an increase in their slaughterhouse capacity. In an effort to address this need, the state farmers' association kicked off 2023 with a feasibility study, focusing on the construction of a slaughterhouse in the Chemnitz region. However, the proposed project is on a much larger scale than the Königshain-Wiederau renovation. In this high-capacity endeavor, a whopping 4600 pigs and 400 cattle were expected to be processed every week, with a single-shift operation topping their to-do list.
Despite the resources required – a hefty investment of more than 35 million euros and the potential of 70 new job openings – this ambitious project never saw the light of day. But fear not, the new slaughterhouse in Königshain-Wiederau is poised to step up and deliver fresh pork to the Food & Beverage industry in the district. The locally-sourced and processed meat will become an essential ingredient for multiple partner companies in food production.
So, as you gear up for your next culinary adventure, rest assured that the Food & Beverage industry in Central Saxony will be laughing all the way to the bank, thanks to the new pig slaughterhouse set to make its debut in 2024!
