New PBS documentary Amerigo questions the future of the American dream

A new PBS documentary exploring the American dream has just premiered at SXSW. Amerigo: The Search for the American Dream, produced by David McCourt, asks whether the idea still holds true today. Alongside the film, a digital project invites people to share their own stories about hope and opportunity in the U.S.

The documentary premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW) before its scheduled PBS debut in June. It features interviews with people from 12 states, capturing a mix of optimism and concern. Some believe the American dream remains alive, while others point to growing wealth inequality as a barrier.

Audience reactions at SXSW mirrored this divide. Roughly half felt the dream was still achievable, but the other half expressed doubt or worry about its future. McCourt's personal connection to the topic runs deep. His grandfather immigrated to the U.S. at 16, bought a home, and died without debt—a story that contrasts sharply with today's economic challenges. The film questions whether such opportunities still exist for newcomers. Alongside the documentary, McCourt's team launched **America-Dreams.com**, a platform where people can submit video messages about their hopes for the country. The project is a collaboration with South Florida PBS, Austin PBS, WVIA, and American Public Television.

The documentary will air on PBS in June, offering a nationwide look at how Americans view success and opportunity. Through interviews and personal stories, it highlights both faith in the future and concerns about fairness. The accompanying website gives viewers a chance to add their voices to the conversation.
