Europe's night trains are making a resurgence, driven by their low carbon footprint. Companies are investing heavily to modernize their aging fleets. Austria's ÖBB, managing 20 European railway routes, is leading the charge.

New Nighttrains in December

ÖBB is spearheading this revival, with new night trains between Germany and Austria starting from December. The state-owned company plans to double the number of night passengers from 1.5 to 3 million by 2030.

ÖBB's new trains boast modern design, enhanced privacy, and an increased number of shower facilities. The first of 33 trains, ordered from Siemens in 2018 for a total of 720 million euros, will debut on December 10. It will connect Vienna and Innsbruck with the German port of Hamburg.

Luxurious Indulgence

Compared to the cramped old sleeper trains, ÖBB's new offerings provide a luxurious experience. Retiree Rosemary, who inspected the new train, described it as "pure luxury." ÖBB's Berlin to Paris night trains will return on December 11, nine years after their cancellation.
