Triumph Unveils the Thruxton 400: A Cafe Racer with a Contemporary Twist
Triumph Motorcycles has introduced a new addition to its lineup, the Thruxton 400. This motorcycle stands out from its siblings and other 400cc motorcycles with its distinctive design, engine tuning, suspension, and pricing.
Design and Styling
The Thruxton 400 embraces the classic café racer aesthetics, featuring a half fairing, clip-on handlebars, bar-end mirrors, a sculpted fuel tank, and a single-seat setup with a rear seat cowl. It also boasts a redesigned tail-light and blacked-out upside-down (USD) front forks. In contrast, the Speed 400 has a more standard roadster look. The Thruxton’s wheelbase is slightly shorter, and it has a lower ground clearance.
Engine and Performance
Both bikes use the same 398cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine from Triumph’s TR-series. The Thruxton 400 has a slightly retuned engine producing about 40 hp and 37.5 Nm of torque, offering a bit more top-end power due to ECU mapping, airbox, and exhaust tweaks.
Chassis and Suspension
The Thruxton 400 features USD telescopic front forks with slightly increased travel compared to the Speed 400, along with a rear mono-shock. Both have 17-inch alloy wheels and dual-channel ABS with front and rear disc brakes.
Instruments and Features
Both motorcycles use a semi-digital instrument cluster with an analogue tachometer. The lighting on the Thruxton 400 is fully LED.
Weight and Fuel Capacity
The Thruxton 400 weighs about 183 kg. Fuel tank capacity remains the same at 13 liters.
Pricing
The Thruxton 400 was launched in India at approximately ₹2.74 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Pricing for the Speed 400 varies by market, but the Thruxton 400's price premium reflects its enhanced features and performance.
In conclusion, the Thruxton 400 offers a unique blend of classic café racer styling, a slightly more powerful and tuned engine, upgraded suspension components, and premium features, positioning it as a more stylish and performance-oriented option in the 400cc segment.
Despite its focus on motorcycles, the Thruxton 400's distinctive design and contemporary tuning echo the thrilling dynamics often associated with sports. The Speed 400, while a fine choice, falls short in delivering the sportier edge offered by the Thruxton 400 due to its enhanced features and performance characteristics.
