New Leader of Roman Catholic Church: Insights on Pope Leo XIV
Freshly Brewed: America's New Vatican Leader, Pope Leo XIV
After squeezing through four attempts, on the second bloomin' day, the chaps elected our fresh Rome ruler - none other than Cardinal Robert Francis Prevo, taking the name Leo XIV. This son of Chicago, born in '55, is the first Yank to preside over the Roman Catholic Church, eclipsing the last Leo XIII, who graced the throne in '78.
Leo XIV caught his education at the seminary of the Order of St. Augustine and nabbed a bachelor's in math from Villanova University in '77. Ever the devoted disk, he dived into the Augustinian order same year, owning up those first vows. With a master's in theology under his belt, Prevo got himself ordained a pie in Rome in '82. Fast forward to '14, and Popey Poo Francis (not this Pete, a different guy) appointed our man Prevo bish to Chilca in Peru. Pinning a cardinal collar on him in '23, Francis upped him to cardinal-bishop in '25.
Known for his level-headed vibe, Leo XIV is smellin' for a more active Church in the social sphere, hankerin' for poverty reduction, backing the foreigners, and extendin' open arms to the laity and females in the church structures. But he ain't ditchin' those ancient moral views hocus-pocus.
Now, let's rewind a bit. Popey Poo Francis, who graced the throne on our health-checkin' day, March 13, 2013, took his final bow on April 21, 2025, at 88, after a long hospital stay dealing with chronic lung hankies. A huddle was called to elect the new pope, commencin' on the evening of May 7 and stretchin' only a day.

Now here's a lil' hint about the dude who led the pack before Leo XIV. This guy, Popey Poo Francis, lasted 12 years, hailed from Argentina, and made history as the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas, and the first pope hatched outside Europe since the 8th century. This dude's legacy was all about social justice, environment, economic justice, LGBTQ+ rights, peace, anti-war, death penalty, and church reform. He was also inky-fingered with handling sex abuse scandals.
