Fresh Young Leadership Takes the Reins in Lower Saxony's Greens
New leadership chosen by the Greens in Lower Saxony - New Leader Elected for Lower Saxony's Green Party
Get ready for some fresh face-lifts in Lower Saxony's Greens! The party has elected a new pair of young leaders after a lively congress held in Celle. The 28-year-old Greta Garlichs from Hannover, who's been at the helm for two years, clinched her re-election with a whopping 78% of the votes. Stepping into the co-chair seat is the 25-year-old Maximilian Strautmann from Osnabrück, who bagged around 55% of the votes. Initially, there were five contenders for the chairmanship.
During her application speech, Garlichs wasted no time in taking a swipe at the CDU leader, Friedrich Merz: "We stand as the antithesis to a Merz, whose word crumbles like sand after three hours, who climbs the ladder with lies instead of integrity." Strautmann, on the other hand, bashed the short-sightedness he believes grips the current federal government - a reason, he argued, why the Greens are more needed than ever. "The Greens can't be skirted by anyone, whether in government or opposition," he declared.
Regrettably, the Greens did not meet their expectations in the recent federal election in February. Across the nation, they dipped to 11.6%, and in Lower Saxony, they managed only 11.5%. In the coming years, this dynamic duo plans to guide their party into the municipal election in 2026 and the state election in 2027 with determination.
With energetic growth in their ranks, Garlichs has her sights set on giving the state association a facelift. When she took office, the party counted approximately 12,500 members; today, their numbers have surged to over 17,000.
Interestingly, the head honcho of Lower Saxony's SPD, Minister President Stephan Weil, is a handful more years than our new Greens' leaders combined at 66 years old.
