In a heartwarming display of unity and support, the cities of Wiesbaden, Germany, and Kamianets-Podilskyi, Ukraine, officially twinned in 2023. The historic ceremony took place in the town hall of Wiesbaden, marking a significant milestone in the relationship between the two cities.
The twinning ceremony was attended by a delegation led by Mayor Mykhailo Positko from Kamianets-Podilskyi. During the event, they signed the Golden Book of Wiesbaden's capital, a prestigious register used to record significant events and important guests. This entry officially commemorated the establishment of the sister-city relationship between Wiesbaden and Kamianets-Podilskyi, symbolising the formalization of cultural and humanitarian ties.
Kamianets-Podilskyi, a city of about 100,000 inhabitants and the third oldest in Ukraine, has been significantly affected by the ongoing conflict resulting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine since 2022. While the city itself has remained largely under Ukrainian control and escaped the worst direct physical damages, it has faced social and economic challenges due to the war, such as an influx of internally displaced persons and strains on local infrastructure.
The twinning with Wiesbaden is intended to provide support during these difficult times, through humanitarian aid programs, cultural exchange, and political solidarity. The twinning ceremony was held from September 10 to 13, 2023, and the distance between the two cities is approximately 1601 kilometers.
Kamianets-Podilskyi, located in western Ukraine, has developed since the late 1990s as one of the most important tourist centers in the region. Despite remaining unaffected by the war, the population is feeling the effects of Russian aggression more and more each day. The city is currently hosting approximately 25,000 refugees seeking shelter from the war.
The twinning between Wiesbaden and Kamianets-Podilskyi represents not only a formal friendship but also a commitment from Wiesbaden to support Kamianets-Podilskyi in the face of Russian aggression, helping the city sustain and rebuild its community during wartime hardships. The twinning ceremony serves as a powerful symbol of friendship and solidarity amidst the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine.
