New Harry Potter series features these star-studded cast members.

In an exciting development for fans of the beloved Harry Potter franchise, HBO Max has announced the cast for key roles in its upcoming series adaptation of J.K. Rowling's books.

The series, which is set to begin production this summer at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, Watford, will run for about a decade with one season per book. The confirmed actors for the new series in the specified roles are:

  • Albus Dumbledore: John Lithgow, a renowned US actor known for his work in "3rd Rock from the Sun" and "Dexter," will take on the role of the wise and beloved headmaster.
  • Professor Minerva McGonagall: Janet McTeer, a British actress who has starred in films like "Albert Nobbs" and "Prime Suspect 1973," will portray the strict and competent Transfiguration professor.
  • Professor Severus Snape: Paapa Essiedu, a talented British actor who has appeared in shows like "Press" and "Chernobyl," will play the complex and mysterious professor.
  • Rubeus Hagrid: Nick Frost, a popular British actor from films like "Hot Fuzz" and "Shaun of the Dead," has been announced as the gamekeeper.
  • Professor Quirinus Quirrell: Ian Hart, who played Quirrell in the original 2001 Harry Potter film, will reprise his role in the series.
  • Caretaker Argus Filch: Paul Whitehouse, a British comedian and actor known for "The Fast Show" and "The Harry Hill Movie," has been cast as the grumpy caretaker.

While the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione for the new series have not been announced yet, over 32,000 children had auditioned for the chance to play these iconic characters. The original films, produced by Warner Bros. and starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson as the main characters, were released in theaters between 2001 and 2011.

The Harry Potter series is a faithful adaptation of the books by J.K. Rowling, with Rowling herself serving as an executive producer for the series. Richard Harris and Michael Gambon previously portrayed Albus Dumbledore in the films. The series has sold over 600 million copies in dozens of languages, with the first book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," published in 1997.
