Hesse's New Coalition Government: Black-Red Unity for a Stable Future
The newest chapter in Hesse's political landscape has been inked with the signing of the black-red coalition agreement. Boris Rhein, the CDU Hesse state chairman, and Nancy Faeser, the SPD state leader, and Federal Minister of the Interior, marked the occasion in Wiesbaden on Monday. Emphasizing an all-inclusive commitment, Rhein noted, "We want to strengthen the majority and the social center, but of course, we also wish to protect minorities."
The agreement comes amidst extraordinary circumstances, as Faeser acknowledged the challenges Hessians are facing in the face of numerous crises. Stressing the need for stability and security, she affirmed that the coalition agreement encapsulates these requirements. The SPD leader also highlighted the coalition’s focus on significant issues across education, worker’s rights, and more.
Chosen as the fitting setting for such an historical moment, the Reinhard Ernst Museum, which is yet to open, earned recognition from both Faeser and Rhein. Rhine celebrated its Modern and Transparent essence, while Faeser remarked on its pioneering symbolism, stating, "Everyone who enters this space senses that something new is taking place." The museum's essence mirrored the fresh start the coalition promises.
After intense negotiations and discussions, the CDU and SPD approved the multi-year government program for the years 2024 to 2029 at their recent conferences. While the CDU endorsed the agreement with an exceeding 99% approval, the SPD saw a notable 82% of delegates voting in favor, following a contested discussion. This is the first Christian-social coalition in Hesse under the CDU's stewardship.
Experiencing a different political landscape for the past decade, Hesse has been led by a black-green coalition, now making way for the new state parliament in Wiesbaden, slated to be inaugurated on January 18.
Sharing his enthusiasm for the collaboration, Rhine stated, "We want to create a new cohesion." The priorities of the coalition agreement also encompass education, families, the rule of law, migration, and integration, agriculture, and healthcare.
Strongly advocating for addressing the concerns of the people, Prime Minister Rhein emphasized that the agreement serves as a robust foundation for addressing challenges.
