Can Ukraine Survive the Russia-Ukraine Conflict Without USA Support? A Look at the New German Chancellor's Role

"New German Chancellor sparks optimism among the populace"

In the heart of Eastern Europe, as tanks parade in Red Square to celebrate Russia's victory over fascism, Ukraine stands on the brink, pondering its survival in the face of a resurgent foe. The transatlantic alliance, fractured under the rule of US President Trump, leaves Ukraine searching for a path to peace, or at least a "Plan B."

Speaking at the Kiev Security Forum, Ukraine's former President Poroschenko expressed hope in the new German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz. "I had the opportunity to chat with him recently, and let me tell you, I was impressed by his dedication to strengthening Germany's influential role in Europe," Poroschenko exclaimed. While Kiev acknowledges the USA's significance as a partner, specialists agree that the city requires a strategy B.

The Ups and Downs of US-Ukraine Relations

Since Trump took office, the Western alliance has displayed signs of strain, a point of contention for Ukraine. Many members of the Western world – including Germany – gathered in Kiev for a discussion focused on Ukraine's defense and the broader security of Europe. Ukraine's former Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk called on the allies, "We did it 80 years ago, and we will restore the world order once more."

Historically, Ukraine has served as a flashpoint for continental conflict. As an agnostic nation nestled between Europe and Russia, its fate has often hinged upon the strength and unity of the West. Today, Ukraine faces a Russian aggressor with different objectives than Trump. Putin warned China and the Global South that peacekeepers would be considered accomplices if they remained neutral.

The Role of Technology in Modern Warfare

In modern warfare, technology plays a critical role. Without the necessary weapons, Ukraine could suffer severe losses, potentially leading to a shift in the balance of power. Commands for unmanned systems, such as drones, are perhaps the most crucial for Ukraine's defense. According to Vjacheslav Shutenko, commander of a battalion for unmanned systems, "Today's wars are about technology, precision, and speed. Unmanned systems are no longer auxiliary systems. They are decisive on the battlefield."

Innovations in military technology are being developed at an astounding pace in Ukraine, driven by the desperate need for survival. Dmytro Shymkiw, a tech entrepreneur, explains that advancements occur swiftly, within a matter of months, even weeks. Collaboration between engineers and military units on the frontlines are nearly seamless, as tech developments are tailored to address the ever-evolving challenges on the battlefield.

The Implications of US Aid Cessation

While support from the USA has been crucial, the question lingers: can Ukraine survive without American aid? A ceasefire appears increasingly unlikely, as Putin shows no inclination to accept peace. Volker, Trump's former Ukraine envoy, reiterates the need for military deterrence: "Putin will never accept peace."

For Ukraine to stand a chance, it needs a mix of international support – diplomatic, economic, and military. The US government exerts pressure on Ukraine but falls short in pressuring Russia. To bring Moscow to the negotiating table, that pressure must grow. In the absence of US aid, Ukraine must turn to other sources for support.

The ideal situation for Ukraine would be ongoing support from the US, but experts such as Steven Pifer, the US ambassador to Ukraine from 1998 to 2000, advise Kyiv to maintain a Plan B. "It is important to continue to involve the US, but it is essential that Kyiv has a contingency plan."
