New film documents scholarly contributions of Professor I Nyoman Wenten in traditional Indonesian music
On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, music enthusiasts and culture lovers alike have the opportunity to attend a special screening of the documentary "Bali: Beats of Paradise" at the Richard Stoute Amphitheatre, National Botanical Garden.
This captivating film, which premiered at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2018, takes viewers on a journey through the heart of Balinese culture, focusing on the sacred art of Gamelan music.
The documentary features Ethnomusicology Professor I Nyoman Wenten, a man who has spent over 40 years studying and performing Gamelan music. Wenten's journey to Bali serves as the film's central narrative, as he seeks to pay homage to this traditional art form that is rapidly diminishing.
The screening will also feature a special appearance by Judith Hill, a Grammy Award-winning artist. Hill collaborates with Wenten in the film, aiming to reintroduce Gamelan to pop music audiences.
The final result of their collaboration is a vibrant music video for Hill's new song, "Queen of the Hill," which seamlessly blends classic funk with traditional Gamelan melody.
