Fresh Take: A New Koala Queen at Leipzig Zoo

Our brand-new koala lady, lovingly named Erlinga, has fit right in at Leipzig Zoo! As per zookeeper Philipp Hünemeyer's delightful revelation to the German Press Agency last Thursday, Erlinga, a two-year-old beauty, has been living her best life in Leipzig for a week now. She hails from Duisburg Zoo and is already thriving in her new habitat.

The transfer of Erlinga to Leipzig Zoo was no small decision. It was recommended by the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) for the preservation of endangered species—thank goodness they included the koala on their list!

The wildlife haven in Leipzig now has three koalas in all. Erlinga shares her enclosure with the six-year-old, Mandie, who's no stranger to motherhood herself—she successfully raised a cub in 2020, demonstrating her remarkable caretaker abilities. Erlinga will soon join forces with the three-year-old, charismatic male, Yuma, to bring fresh koala babies into the world. Female koalas can start bearing young around three years old, so get ready for some cute little joey action!

Philipp Hünemeyer, a dedicated animal keeper, has enjoyed watching Erlinga acclimate to Leipzig in her downtime. Leipzig Zoo in Saxony takes its role in preserving endangered species extremely seriously, and the EEP is a vital part of their mission.
