New candidates climb the ranks: CSU names their top picks for European elections
Get ready to see some fresh faces as the Christian Social Union (CSU) gears up for the European elections next June! Following front-runner Manfred Weber, the CSU's second to sixth spots on their party list have been filled by seasoned MEPs and a rookie candidate. The selected nominees include Angelika Niebler, Christian Doleschal, Monika Hohlmeier, Markus Ferber, and Stefan Köhler from Lower Franconia.
The CSU has traditionally maintained a presence in the European Parliament with a team of six MEPs. This year, agricultural expert Marlene Mortler won't be joining them as she steps down from the race.
Angelika Niebler, who's been a stalwart in the EU Parliament since 1999, received an almost unanimous 97% of votes at the delegates meeting in Nuremberg. Christian Doleschal snagged third place with around 91% of the vote, followed closely by Monika Hohlmeier with around 94%.
Markus Ferber, an MEP since 1994, has earned his spot at the fifth position on the list after obtaining 93% of the votes cast at the meeting. Making his debut at the sixth spot is Stefan Köhler, who secured almost 94% of the votes in Lower Franconia.
Before the election, CSU party leader Markus Söder thanked retiring MEPs for their dedication and encouraged his own party to appreciate their hard work. "It's truly remarkable to witness the relentless efforts of our brave troop, fighting off adversaries like a Gallic village surrounded by others," Söder said.
CSU's preparations for the European elections are well underway, with several candidates lining up for a shot at maintaining their representation in the European Parliament. The CSU, being part of the CDU/CSU alliance, is working together to formulate a unified election program focusing on lowering taxes, reducing income tax, and stopping illegal migration.
The CDU/CSU alliance has nominated Friedrich Merz as their chancellor candidate for the German federal elections on February 23, 2025. While detailed candidate listings and voting percentages for the European Parliament elections are not yet available, expect the CDU/CSU alliance to make a strong showing in the elections.
