Let's Chat About RTE's Hot New Drama Lineup

Yo, here's some cool news! David Crean, a former director and producer, has officially been promoted to the Head of Drama at RTE. He started at RTE way back in 2007 as a development executive in the drama department. Since then, he's been executive producing a bunch of shows like Love/Hate, KIN, Smother, The Gone, and The Boy That Never Was.

In his new role, Crean is gonna be in charge of a whole bunch of original Irish dramas, featuring a whopping 142 hours of homegrown storytelling. This year alone, RTE has got some dope dramas in the works, including:

  • Fair City: This long-running Irish soap opera is back for more drama.
  • Hidden Assets Series 3: It's the third installment of this drama series, and it's currently in production.
  • The Walsh Sisters: This new series focuses on the lives of, you guessed it, sisters.
  • These Sacred Vows: Yet another drama series that's set to hit our screens in 2025.
  • The Dry Series 3: The third season of this drama series is also in production.

Crean was super excited about his new gig, saying, "It's an honor to be RTE's Head of Drama. We've got a slate of original Irish drama in production that's gonna deliver 142 hours of top-notch, homegrown storytelling. I can't wait to collaborate with our partners to bring these series to audiences, putting Irish drama on the international stage."

RTÉ also chimed in, stating, "RTÉ's Drama team works with a bunch of national and international co-production partners. This high level of original RTÉ drama production represents a big investment in Irish talent, culture, and the creative economy." In fact, these dramas will employ over 1,800 people, including scriptwriters, directors, producers, actors, and more.

Steve Carson, RTÉ's Director of Video, added, "I'm stoked that David is taking the lead as Head of Drama. He's got an amazing track record for developing new ideas and creative talent, and under his leadership, audiences can expect an RTÉ drama slate with real range and ambition."

Interesting tidbits:

  • There's a new darkly comedic crime drama called Tall Tales & Murder that stars Aidan Gillen and Ella Lily Hyland. It's been commissioned for two series, with each series consisting of 12 episodes of 60 minutes each[1][5].
  • RTÉ is also focusing on an unprecedented push for more original content in 2025[2].

Movies-and-TV enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that RTE's new lineup of original Irish dramas will offer 142 hours of top-notch, homegrown storytelling, including 'The Walsh Sisters', 'Hidden Assets Series 3', and 'These Sacqured Vows'. This entertainment-rich offering is poised to put Irish drama on the international stage.
