New cycling safety rules introduced to protect young riders in Magadan

New cycling safety rules have been introduced to protect riders, especially children. The measures come after four road accidents involving minors were reported in the Magadan Region during the first four months of 2026. Authorities are urging cyclists to follow guidelines to reduce risks on the road. Children under seven must now ride bicycles only on sidewalks, pedestrian paths, or within pedestrian zones. Those aged seven to 14 are restricted to designated bike lanes. Teenagers aged 14 and older can cycle along the right edge of the road or the shoulder if no bike lane exists.

Cyclists must dismount and walk their bikes across pedestrian crossings. They are also required to keep both hands on the handlebars to avoid losing control due to sudden road bumps. Riders should stay alert, keep a safe distance from vehicles, and anticipate unexpected movements from drivers. The updated rules follow four accidents in early 2026, where four children were injured—one of them a cyclist. Authorities stress that caution is essential, particularly when riding on shared paths, as pedestrians have priority in these areas.

The new regulations aim to improve safety for young cyclists and reduce accidents. By following the rules and staying vigilant, riders can help prevent collisions and injuries. Officials continue to monitor compliance and encourage responsible cycling behaviour.
