- Let's get this party started!
Gollum's latest big-screen adventure slated for theaters in 2027 - New cinematic venture exploring the life of Gollum set for release in the year 2027
The Middle-earth enthusiasts rejoice! **As buzzed about by the entertainment gossip mill "Variety", Warner Bros. has officially locked in the theatrical release date for "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" (also known as "Ger: The Hunt for Gollum"). This flick is set to premiere on December 17, 2027 – just in time for your holiday movie marathon, same as its cinematic predecessors in the series.
Andy Serkis Double-Trouble
Andy Serkis (61, playing the lanky age here), the bloke behind the mo-cap digital wonders of Gollum since "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" in 2002, will not only reprise his role as the enigmatic Gollum but will also wield the director's megaphone. Serkis' directorial CV boasts films like "Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle" and "Venom: Let There Be Carnage".
The studio initially announced that the film would drop in 2026. But alas! The flick's commencement, announced in the sweaty summer of 2024, has been pushed back a whole year.
The Time Between Baggins' Birthday Bash and Moria's Woes
The nitty-gritty of the film's narrative has already leaked out. Philippa Boyens, who, along with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, produced the original trilogy, dished to "Empire" magazine that "The Hunt for Gollum" is an engrossing, edge-of-your-seat story that unfolds after Bilbo's birthday party and before the events that ensue in the Mines of Moria. "It's a particular snippet from a breathtaking, untold story, recounted from the perspective of this fascinating creature," Boyens declared.
The trio of Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens will produce this film, as well. Warner Bros made it crystal clear in the project's announcement that the three will be involved in every step of the journey to preserve the essence of Middle-earth, as envisioned by Tolkien.
Your Favorites, Back for More?
Hope springs eternal for fans that besides our beloved Gollum, other esteemed figures from the original "Lord of the Rings" trilogy may make a comeback. Actors like Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) have expressed an interest in reprising their roles if the story allows. However, there's no official green light for additional cast members as of yet.
Warner Bros is keeping the Middle-earth saga going strong. Both the "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies raked in approximately 2.9 billion USD worldwide each. The latest screen appearance of the franchise was the anime flick "The Lord of the Rings: The Battle of the Rohirrim" in December 2024. "The Hunt for Gollum" will mark the first live-action film from the "Lord of the Rings" universe since "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" in 2014.
Other Release Dates
In addition to "The Hunt for Gollum", Warner Bros has also announced release dates for other productions. The next "Evil Dead" film with Souheila Yacoub will enter theaters on July 24, 2026, while M. Night Shyamalan's "Remain" with Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor, and Ashley Walters is scheduled to debut on October 23, 2026.
