The Films Get a Completely New Main Cast - New Cast Assembles for 'The Resurrection of the Christ' Sequel in Rome

Production of 'The Resurrection of the Christ' sequel has kicked off in Rome with a fresh ensemble cast. Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen steps into the role of Jesus, while Cuban actress Mariela Garriga takes over from Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. Kasia Smutniak will play Maria, and Riccardo Scamarcio will portray Pontius Pilatus.

The new cast brings a mix of European talent to the biblical epic. Ohtonen, known for his work in Finnish and international cinema, takes on the titular role previously played by Jim Caviezel. Garriga, a Cuban actress with credits in both film and television, replaces Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. Smutniak, an Italian-Polish actress, will depict Maria, the mother of Jesus. Italian actor Scamarcio will portray Pontius Pilatus.

Rupert Everett will also make an appearance in an unnamed role, adding to the film's star power. The recasting was primarily driven by cost considerations, as digitally rejuvenating the original cast would have been expensive.

The first part of 'The Resurrection of the Christ' is set to hit screens on March 26, 2027, followed by the second part on May 6, 2027. Fans of the original film can expect a new take on the story with this talented cast.
