New Book Celebrates 60 Years of Moorhead Spuds Hockey

A new book, 'Onward Moorhead: An Illustrated History of MHS Spud Hockey 1965-2025', is set to hit the shelves this fall. This comprehensive tome celebrates the rich history of Moorhead High School's (MHS) hockey teams, with a special focus on the dedicated individuals who have contributed to their success over the years.

At the heart of this story is Gary Haskins, a Dilworth resident who has been driving the Moorhead Spuds boys hockey teams for over four decades. His commitment began in 1983 and has spanned various weather conditions, from blizzards to sunny days. Gary's role was more than just transportation; he became an integral part of the team, chauffeuring at least seven different fathers and their sons who played for the Spuds. His wife, Carol, would often wait up late into the night for his safe return.

The book, available for pre-order now, highlights key moments from both the boys' and girls' hockey teams at MHS. It includes the boys' first-ever state title and profiles of standout Spuds and others who have contributed to the program's success. Each copy comes with exclusive access to a 30-minute documentary capturing the Spuds' 2024-25 state championship triumph.

Gary and Carol considered the team an extension of their own family, attending many banquets with the Spuds. In 2021, the team honored Gary with a framed piece of art featuring team photos from 1983 to 2021. The upcoming book is a testament to Gary's dedication and the enduring spirit of the Moorhead Spuds hockey program.
