New arrivals at "Avangard", as Ponomarev declares, are on a mission to bring joy to Omsk.
Straight-Up with Ponomarev's Big Move
Vasilily Ponomarev, a versatile ice hockey forward with a knack for playmaking, has finally signed with "Avangard" Omsk, returning to his homeland after a stint in North America.
After a brief sojourn in the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins system and the AHL's Carolina Hurricanes' farm team, Ponomarev is now on a three-year deal with "Avangard." The agreement was officially inked at a lively "Buenosletos" party, surrounded by avid "yastreb" supporters.
Ponomarev excitedly announced his arrival, expressing his eagerness to compete for the coveted Gagarin Cup.
"Avangard" seemed like a dream destination for a trophy fight. After winning the Calder Cup in the AHL, I didn't find a similar opportunity anywhere else. The top-notch management team, including Evgeny Kravnov, German Chistyakov, and Alexei Sopin, have my utmost respect. They showed genuine interest in me, and I believe we can make Omsk proud in May," Ponomarev told "Championat."
Negotiations for his transfer proved a long-winded affair, as Ponomarev's rights were formerly owned by Moscow's "Spartak." Leaving the red-and-whites is no easy feat for any ice hockey player, as their management resists parting ways with their assets.
"I'm overjoyed, and words can't express my emotions. The process leading up to this deal took a significant amount of time. It's not simple to depart from "Spartak," so I owe gratitude to both clubs for reaching an agreement eventually," Ponomarev admitted.
Omsk's atmosphere hums with positivity, boasting friendly fans, a stellar coaching staff, and a promising team in the making.
Labelled as a center forward, Ponomarev is confident about his new role.
"I see myself as a center forward. "Avangard" requested my services as a center, and I'm comfortable delivering in various positions on the ice, including power play, penalty kill, and "three on five" or "four on six." I think the club knew exactly what they were signing," Ponomarev added.
"Avangard" is planning more "Buenosletos" parties, hinting that fans can anticipate further signings. After a hectic post-season, "yastreb" parted ways with several players.
