New air route transforms life in Russia's isolated Ayano-Maysky District
A new air route will launch on April 1, 2023, linking the remote settlements of Okhotsk, Nelkan, Dzhigda, and Aim. The service, operated by Dalnerechensk Avia, aims to improve access to essential supplies and medical care for residents in the Ayano-Maysky District.
Before this development, the region relied almost entirely on seasonal river transport via the Maya River and limited helicopter services. Supplies often took 2-4 weeks to arrive—far longer than in other remote areas like Chukotka or Magadan Oblast. Shortages were common, and treatable medical conditions saw mortality rates 20-30% above the national average, according to Rosstat 2019 data.
The new flights will change this. Residents can now buy groceries and essential goods from stores with wider selections and lower prices. More importantly, the route will provide faster access to high-quality medical care. The regional budget subsidises the service to keep ticket prices affordable. Regular flights will also help maintain reliable connections with the outside world for these isolated communities.
The introduction of direct flights marks a major shift for the Ayano-Maysky District. Faster supply deliveries and improved medical access are expected to reduce shortages and lower preventable deaths. The service begins operations on April 1, 2023.
