New 2026 Program Explores Rhön Biosphere Reserve's Hidden Challenges
A new educational program will explore the Rhön Biosphere Reserve from May 4 to 8, 2026. Organised by Akademie Burg Fürsteneck and local conservation groups, the course offers hands-on learning about the region's agriculture, conservation, and development challenges. Participants will join field visits and short hikes across the unique landscape.
The Rhön Biosphere Reserve spans three federal states: Hesse, Bavaria, and Thuringia. Recognised by UNESCO, the area is known for its striking natural scenery and deep cultural history. The region has long faced tensions, shaped by human activity and its past division during Germany's reunification.
The five-day program includes a three-day excursion with guided field trips. Attendees will examine the balance between farming, environmental protection, and local growth. Sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing are recommended for the outdoor activities. The course is accredited and provides direct experience of the Rhön's conditions. It is run in partnership with the Nature and Living Space Rhön Association and the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve administration. While exact registration numbers for similar programs are unavailable, comparable courses in other German reserves attract between 95 and 1,700 participants annually.
The program aims to give participants a deeper understanding of the Rhön's environmental and social dynamics. Those attending will gain firsthand knowledge of the region's ongoing challenges and conservation efforts. Registration details and further information are expected to be released closer to the event date.
