Neuwied's Speed Enforcement Cuts Violations and Boosts Revenue by 2025
Neuwied launched a road safety initiative in late October 2023 to cut speeding and reduce police workload. The scheme involved targeted checks on urban roads using mobile and tripod-mounted monitoring systems. By 2025, the results showed fewer violations and significant revenue from fines.
The city's regulatory office started speed enforcement in 2023 after selecting sites based on accident data, local conditions, and resident feedback. In the first year, 160,398 measurements recorded 7,284 speeding offences. This figure dropped to 6,748 in the second year, even with more checks in place.
The share of drivers breaking limits also fell, from 4.54% to 4.10%. Alongside speeding, 38 motorists were caught using mobile phones, each facing a €100 fine and a penalty point.
By 2025, fines and warnings totalled €209,310, with around €191,357 already paid. The tougher enforcement also led to 25 driving bans for repeat or severe speeding offences.
Equipment included a mobile enforcement vehicle and a tripod system, allowing flexible deployment across high-risk areas.
The two-year campaign has cut speeding rates and generated revenue for Neuwied. With fewer violations and stricter penalties, the city's approach appears to have improved compliance. The scheme continues to rely on data and community input to guide enforcement.
