Neuss police crack down on seatbelt violations in EU safety week
Police in Rhein-Kreis Neuss carried out road safety checks as part of Roadpol's 'Seatbelt' safety week. Officers set up a fixed checkpoint in Neuss to monitor compliance and raise awareness about the risks of not wearing seatbelts. The campaign aimed to remind drivers of their responsibility on the roads.
The checkpoint was positioned at the junction of Hammer Landstraße and Batteriestraße. Officers also conducted mobile patrols in the area during the afternoon. Alongside seatbelt checks, speed enforcement identified 129 additional traffic violations.
During the operation, 39 offences were recorded, including six cases of drivers or passengers not wearing seatbelts properly. To highlight the importance of road safety, police displayed the #LIFE letters at the checkpoint. The letters served as a visual reminder of the potential consequences of reckless driving. Data from Baden-Württemberg in 2025 showed that 42 out of 150 fatalities involving mandatory seatbelt use were either unbelted or improperly restrained. Nationwide, the UDV (German Insurers Accident Research) estimates that correct seatbelt use could prevent around 200 deaths and 1,500 serious injuries each year.
The checks in Neuss formed part of broader efforts to improve road safety across Germany. While exact nationwide figures for seatbelt-related fatalities remain unavailable, research suggests proper restraints save lives. Police continue to emphasise the importance of following traffic laws to reduce accidents and injuries.
