Wolfgang Neubert Steps Down as LSB President After Twelve Years

After a decade and a half at the helm, Wolfgang Neubert, the revered head of the Brandenburg State Sports Association (LSB), is stepping down from the sports policy scene. His farewell ceremony takes place during the 10th State Sports Day this coming Saturday in Potsdam. Leading the way as his successor is Karl-Heinz Hegenbart, who shares Neubert's dedication to sports with a staggering ten years as LSB's Vice President of Popular Sports and Sports Development.

As Neubert hands over the mantle, LSB Brandenburg has never been in a stronger position. With over 361,000 members across more than 2,900 clubs, membership peaked at the start of the year. Neubert's time in office saw a significant leap in sports funding from the state government, climbing from the initial 15 million euros when he first assumed office in 2011 to a grand sum of over 24 million euros today. The remarkable "Haus des Sports" building in Potsdam's Luftschiffhafen was also completed during this period with substantial assistance from the state government.

"The completion of 'Haus des Sports' is an incredible achievement for our sporting region. Despite the unprecedented challenges posed by the coronavirus and energy crisis, we managed to see this vision come to life. This accomplishment is a testament to the positive developments in Brandenburg," beamed Neubert, who also served as the president of FC Energie Cottbus for two years between 2014 and 2016.

Volunteer recruitment is identified as the primary challenge for the future by Neubert, with both coaches and officials required in large numbers. "Volunteer work in sports is invaluable. However, our society does not appreciate sports as much as it used to. The younger generation is less inclined to offer their time and skills to clubs than my generation did," observed Neubert, who will cease his own volunteering activities after his departure.

"This is the end of my era in volunteering. The transition will be daunting. I must be cautious not to lose my footing during this transition," admitted Neubert, who has resided in the Ore Mountains in recent years.

In his tenure, Neubert successfully expanded sports funding from 15 million euros to over 24 million euros. Hegenbart, Neubert's chosen successor, vows to uphold Neubert's vision for the LSB, amplifying the vital role of volunteers in driving sports developments in Brandenburg.
