The Dutch King Willem-Alexander delivered the traditional throne speech in The Hague on Tuesday, marking a significant moment in the country's political landscape. This year's Prinsjesdag, an event that marks the start of the parliamentary year, was an unusual situation due to political changes.

The ceremony took place in the royal theater in The Hague, as the parliament building is currently undergoing renovations. The king, Queen Máxima, and all three of their daughters attended the speech. The royal family traveled to the theater in the "Glass Coach" drawn by eight black horses, a sight that never fails to captivate royal fans.

In his speech, the king lamented increasing polarization in Dutch politics and emphasized the need for the willingness to extend a mature hand across differences. He said debates and differing opinions are part of a vibrant democracy, but stressed the importance of finding common ground.

The government coalition collapsed in the summer, following the withdrawal of Geert Wilders' Party for Freedom (PVV) from the coalition over disagreements on asylum policy. As a result, new elections are scheduled for October 29.

The king called on politicians to work together, a sentiment echoed by the departure of both the centrist party D66 and Geert Wilders' PVV from the coalition. The king's call for unity comes at a time when the remaining two governing parties no longer have a majority in parliament.

Despite the stormy weather, the streets were lined with many thousands of onlookers, eager to catch a glimpse of the royal family. The balcony scene was a highlight for many, offering a brief respite from the political turmoil that has engulfed the Netherlands.

As the country prepares for new elections, the king's words serve as a reminder of the importance of unity and cooperation in a democracy. The Dutch people will be closely watching the political landscape in the coming months, eager to see how the political parties will respond to the king's call for unity.
