"Netflix's 'Tinder Swindler' Victims Rejoice Over Long-Awaited Arrest of Alleged Scammer in Georgia"
In a significant development, notorious Israeli fraudster Simon Leviev, also known as Shimon Yehuda Hayut, was arrested at Batumi airport in Georgia at Interpol's request. Leviev, who became infamous for romance fraud and financial crimes, is now facing the consequences of his actions.
One of Leviev's victims, Pernilla Sjoholm from Stockholm, expressed her joy upon hearing the news. Sjoholm, who lost over 600,000 kronor (RM272,369) to Leviev, stated that he had destroyed her life. Another victim, Cecilie Fjellhoy from London, also expressed relief and a sense of celebration. Fjellhoy, like Sjoholm, has filed police complaints against Leviev in Sweden and the Netherlands, and is ready to testify against him in the event of a trial.
Leviev's notoriety rose after investigative reports and media coverage exposed his fraudulent activities. One of the most notorious examples of his schemes was using the dating app Tinder to pose as a wealthy heir and trick women into advancing him large sums of money. Between 2017 and 2019, he allegedly used this scam to accumulate victims.
Sjoholm met Leviev on Tinder in March 2018. Within a few months of their friendship, Leviev defrauded Sjoholm. Despite feeling a sense of calm and protection knowing future victims would be safe, Fjellhoy expressed frustration that it took so long for Leviev to be arrested.
The International Arrest Warrant for Simon Leviev was issued by the Israeli authorities. Sjoholm has become involved in the fight against financial fraud and expresses gratitude towards the country that issued the warrant. Sjoholm's statement regarding Leviev's arrest was, "His arrest 'is a win'."
Leviev's arrest comes after he described a "very happy family life" in an interview, attempting to portray a different image from the reality of his actions. However, Sjoholm advocates for better regulation of the use of artificial intelligence in deepfakes, calling for better protection of victims from financial fraud.
As the legal proceedings against Leviev unfold, the victims find a sense of closure and hope for justice. The arrest serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and the fight against financial fraud in the digital age.
