Netflix's Mobile Gaming Strategy Shows Mixed Results

Netflix's foray into mobile gaming has yielded varying results, with some titles performing exceptionally well while others have struggled to gain traction.

According to data compiled by What's on Netflix and verified by Variety, the game "Solitaire" holds the No. 1 spot in the Top 5 most-played games on Netflix's app. The popularity of "Squid Game: Unleashed" may be attributed to the third and final season of "Squid Game," which debuted on June 27. These two games are joined by "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition," "Football Manager Mobile 2024," and "Bloons TD 6" in the top five.

However, Netflix's mobile game "Blood Line: A Rebel Moon Game" has performed poorly compared to other titles. It did not appear in the top 15 most-played games on Netflix, despite its splashy launch and beta period. The reasons for its poor performance likely include low player engagement, Netflix's shifting strategy for games under new leadership, and the Rebel Moon film series being "on ice."

Netflix's strategy for mobile games seems to be evolving, with the company focusing more on TV and web games rather than mobile games. This shift in focus may explain why mobile game releases are no longer a high priority.

It's worth noting that Netflix has recently begun to remove several third-party titles from its mobile game offering. Among the remaining games are "Squid Game: Unleashed," "Farming Simulator 23," and the "Netflix Stories" franchise, which is included in the list of the remaining 10 games.

Representatives for Netflix declined to comment on these aggregated rankings for its mobile titles. Despite this, it's clear that Netflix is continuing to grow its in-house gaming division with more titles based on its own IP for both mobile and TV platforms.
