Netflix working on script for Gorillaz animated film
In a disappointing turn of events for fans of the virtual band Gorillaz, the upcoming animated feature film on Netflix has been cancelled. The decision was made due to Netflix cutting back its animation budget in 2025, leaving the Gorillaz movie without an official release date or storyline.
This cancellation marks the band's first attempt at a full-length animated movie, a departure from their previous documentaries that focus on music creation, collaborations, and behind-the-scenes content. The cancelled film was intended to be an animated story immersed in the Gorillaz lore and characters, potentially expanding their animated universe.
The film, which was first mentioned in October 2020, was expected to follow a style and format similar to Studio Ghibli, promising a visually stunning and immersive experience for viewers. Damon Albarn, the voice behind Gorillaz, expressed his excitement about the project during an interview on Apple Music, stating that Netflix seems like a good creative team for the Gorillaz film.
However, with the cancellation, fans can currently expect Gorillaz music releases, such as their new 2025 album. Although the film is no longer in production, a writing session for the Gorillaz film is scheduled to take place in Malibu, indicating that there may be future plans for the project.
Netflix remains a powerful force in the entertainment industry, and collaborations with influential bands like Gorillaz are not uncommon. The band is known for creating animated stories within their music, making them a perfect fit for the streaming giant.
In a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Damon Albarn discussed the cancelled film, primarily to promote his new solo album. Despite the disappointing news, fans can still look forward to new music from Gorillaz and perhaps future plans for the animated film.
