In the world of television, a new series is set to captivate audiences with its epic, soapy, and culturally vibrant narrative. "Unaccustomed Earth," produced by Warner Bros. Television, is an eight-episode drama series scheduled to premiere on Netflix in October 2025.
The series, based on the Jhumpa Lahiri collection of short stories, follows the lives of a tight-knit Indian American community. Ritesh Batra, known for films like "The Lunchbox" and "Photograph," directs and executive produces the first two episodes of the series.
Madhuri Shekar, the writer of "3 Body Problem" and "The Nevers," serves as the writer and showrunner of "Unaccustomed Earth." Shekar also executive produces the series, along with John Wells, Batra, Lahiri, Ganatra, Saleh, Jontow, and Costas.
Justin Bartha, known for his roles in "Godfather of Harlem" and "National Treasure," joins the cast as Adam Weiss, an affable husband, sci-fi author, and proud stay-at-home dad. Jayant Kripalani, Parveen Kaur, Swayam Bhatia, and Palomi Ghosh also join the cast, playing intriguing characters in this complex narrative.
Ghosh portrays Anjali Menon, a formidable dance teacher to the local Indian community, who lost her husband a decade ago and has rebuilt her life, work, and place in the community with tenacious grit. Kripalani portrays Pranab Mukherjee, a retired professor who immigrated to the United States in his 20s and is now enjoying his garden, family, and books.
The series delves into the lives of these characters, exploring their relationships, secrets, and personal struggles. Anjali has a rocky, combative relationship with her kids, but is genuinely trying her best. Pranab's wife passed away a year ago, and he unexpectedly and inexplicably fell in love with a new woman, hiding it from his disapproving children.
A star-crossed romance between a devoted wife and her long-lost love leads to a scandalous affair, causing doubts and questions to arise. Kaur plays Nina Singh, a brilliant and driven Harvard med student on her way to being valedictorian, who is newly engaged to Amit. However, doubts about Amit cause Kaur to question whether he is the man she thought she knew.
Bhatia plays Sudha Menon, Hema's best friend and confidant. She is funny, confident, queer, and never hesitates to share her opinion. Production on the series is currently underway, and fans are eagerly awaiting its premiere in October 2025. With its engaging storyline, diverse cast, and talented crew, "Unaccustomed Earth" promises to be a must-watch series.
