Netflix expands agreement with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, to some extent
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have extended their partnership with streaming giant Netflix through their media company, Archewell Productions. The multi-year, first-look deal for film and television projects will now also include the As Ever brand, marking a deepening of their creative and business partnership.
The original Netflix deal, which began in 2020, has produced several successful projects, including the highly viewed docuseries Harry & Meghan (2022), Heart of Invictus (2023), and Live to Lead (2023). The extension notably includes integrating As Ever into their content efforts with Netflix.
Netflix's chief content officer Bela Bajaria expressed excitement about the continued partnership, citing the success of Meghan's product line, As Ever. According to Bajaria, fans have been inspired by Meghan's holiday special, "With Love, Meghan," causing products from the new As Ever line to sell out rapidly.
As Ever recently launched a rose wine, and restocked with a second vintage after the first one sold out within 45 minutes. Moreover, 20% of As Ever's sales were made by repeat customers, with many buying in lots of six or 12.
In a statement this morning, via a spokesperson, Harry hinted at his continued commitment to supporting Lesotho's young people. Harry has expressed interest in starting another charity in Sentebale's image, but no decisions have been made regarding its form.
A forthcoming documentary about an orphanage for children living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda, "Masaka Kids, Rhythm Within," seems to be the only project announced today that leans more towards Harry's interests. The special is described as "holiday wonder with warmth, tradition, and a generous dose of joy."
Meghan Markle is also set to release a seasonal special titled "With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration" on Netflix later this year.
The partnership between Meghan Markle and Netflix will continue on less secure circumstances than their original deal, as per reports. However, Netflix will still have first dibs on any projects created via Archewell Productions.
The news of the extended partnership comes amidst ongoing controversy surrounding Harry's resignation as patron of Sentebale in March. Chandauka, the chairperson of Sentebale, accused Harry of bullying and harassment, but the British charity watchdog found no evidence of this, although they did criticize him for allowing the internal dispute to play out publicly.
Despite the controversy, it appears that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are forging ahead with their creative and business ventures, expanding their reach and impact through their partnership with Netflix and the As Ever brand.
