Netflix duo Harry and Meghan subtly addressed reports suggesting the cancellation of their streaming deal, amid allegations of financial strain.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have extended their partnership with streaming giant Netflix, moving from a lucrative multi-year deal to a more conditional first-look arrangement. This change in terms reflects Netflix's cautious approach as the streaming market becomes increasingly competitive.
The new deal, signed through their company Archewell Productions, is similar to the agreement previously held by former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama. Under this first-look deal, Netflix now has the right of first refusal on any new projects from the couple, although they can choose to reject their proposals, reducing the Sussexes' guaranteed output or income.
Despite industry skepticism and challenges with their past content, Netflix remains interested in retaining Meghan and Harry. The couple has already released five projects through Archewell Productions, including the highly successful 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan, which remains Netflix's most-watched documentary debut to date.
Upcoming projects under this new deal include Meet Me at the Lake, a romance feature adaptation of the bestselling novel of the same name by Carley Fortune, and Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within, a documentary about children in the Masaka region of Uganda. Additionally, Season 2 of Meghan's Netflix series With Love, Meghan will premiere later this month, and a holiday special, With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration, will premiere in December.
Meghan Markle expressed her enthusiasm about the extended partnership, stating, "We feel inspired by our partners and the Archewell Productions team, and I'm proud of the thoughtful content we've created together." She also made no mention of changing her name again.
However, reports suggest that the Archewell Foundation, the charity arm of the Sussexes, has faced financial challenges. Sources indicate that the team is running out of money and staff, leading to layoffs.
Despite these challenges, the couple remains committed to creating content that celebrates their shared vision and resonates globally. The shift in their partnership with Netflix reflects a new era for the Sussexes, as they navigate their roles in the entertainment industry and beyond.
