In a surprising turn of events, the animated Netflix film, KPop Demon Hunters, has surpassed Dwayne Johnson's Red Notice in terms of views, becoming Netflix's most-watched film ever. This unexpected success can be attributed to the unique blend of animated action, musical elements, and its connection to the massive global K-pop fanbase.

KPop Demon Hunters tells the story of a fictional K-pop girl band, Huntr/x, who secretly fight demons. The film's animation style, action sequences, and humor have appealed to western audiences, while its extensive depiction of K-pop culture has found a natural fanbase in Asia. Some scenes are set at fan signing events and concerts, featuring colorful light sticks and placards, further immersing viewers in the K-pop world.

The film's soundtrack, produced by Sony Pictures Animation with the help of Teddy Park and Grammy-winning Michel Lindgren Schulz, has broken records by placing four simultaneous songs in the Billboard Hot 100 top 10. This significant boost in interest and streaming, both on Netflix and music platforms like Spotify, has contributed to KPop Demon Hunters reaching 184.6 million views since its release on June 20.

Netflix's strategic release of a sing-along version in key markets such as the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand has driven multiple viewing formats and audience engagement. The film's heart-warming central themes of friendship, trust, self-discovery, and staying true to your identity have resonated with viewers, making KPop Demon Hunters a summer hit.

Critics have also praised the film, with audiences awarding it 91% and critics giving it an average rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. In contrast, Red Notice received an average critics rating of just 37% on the same platform.

As of August, 1,281 articles have already been written about KPop Demon Hunters, with the number increasing nearly four-fold to 1,394 during its release month. Netflix is now developing two animated sequels, a live-action remake, an animated TV series, and a stage musical for the KPop Demon Hunters franchise.

It is expected that KPop Demon Hunters will soon pass Red Notice in terms of views. The film's global popularity and cultural wave, effective tapping into the K-pop phenomenon, collaborations with top K-pop producers and songwriters, Netflix's strategic release of a sing-along version, and the appeal of a fresh animated action-musical genre have all played key roles in its success.
