Netflix announces primary cast for the upcoming FTX series, The Philanthropist
Streaming giant Netflix has revealed the two actors set to portray Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison in the upcoming limited series inspired by the FTX scandal. Known as "The Altruist," the eight-episode drama series is produced by Higher Ground, the production company helmed by former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.
The show follows the intriguing narrative of the rise and fall of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange and the intricate relationship between its former CEO, Sam Bankman-Fried, and Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research.
Netflix confirmed the leads for the series, with Anthony Boyle set to portray Bankman-Fried, and Julia Garner taking on the role of Ellison. Boyle is an award-winning actor, known for his roles in mini-series like "Say Nothing" and "Masters of the Air," as well as films such as "Tetris" and "Tolkien." Garner has gained critical acclaim for her appearances in shows like "Ozark" and "Inventing Anna."
As reported by Netflix, the show will be co-showrun by Graham Moore and Jacqueline Hoyt. Moore is known for directing films like "The Imitation Game" and "The Outfit," and Hoyt for producing shows like "The Underground Railroad," "Dietland," and "The Leftovers." James Ponsoldt, director of "The Spectacular Now" and "Daisy Jones & The Six," is slated to direct the first episode.
Although Netflix has not specified an exact airdate for the show, it is possible that Ellis, who was sentenced to 24 months in prison, may manage to watch it before it is removed from the platform. She is estimated to be released in May 2026 by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. Bankman-Fried, on the other hand, is expected to be released four years earlier than his originally sentenced 25-year prison term due to good behavior credits, prison program participation, and pre-sentencing detention.
